Harry “Windy” Winston Homer, 83, surrounded by members of his family, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 7, 2011 at the Veterans Home in Silver Bay, MN. Windy was born on January 30, 1928 in Ely to Harry J. and Helia (Kayute) Homer.Windy was a life long resident of Ely, graduating from Ely Memorial High School. He served in both the U.S. Army Air Force and the U.S. Army as a heavy equipment instructor and operator during WWII-Korean Conflict. Upon returning from the military, he joined his father in the Harry Homer Forest Products family business.

Windy was instrumental in changing the forest operations from horse and axe to machinery and chainsaws. He provided timber for the iron ore mines on the Iron Range, pulp wood for the area paper companies and lumber to the local Ely area. Many will remember his logging truck coming down the Echo Trail with the logo “Here comes Windy.” He came by that name honestly.Harry was an active member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was a volunteer fireman for the City of Ely for many years. When he retired from the logging and sawmill business in the early ’80s, he continued to do road construction and lakeshore development.

In 1962, Harry married Marcia M. Martin in Ely. They were married for 49 years. Together they raised six children. Windy is survived by wife Marcia of Ely; daughters: Stephanie (Dave) Sustercich of Brainerd, MN; Mara Potthier of Grand Forks, ND; Carla (Tim) Dupont, Brooklyn Park; Leslie Homer, Boise ID; sons: Harry W. and Jason (Jill) both of Ely; grandchildren: David (Tiffany) Sustercich, Marty Homer, Ryan Gerzin, Olivia Quesnell, Tenely Quesnell, Caroline Homer, Tommy Homer, Angela DuPont, Rachel DuPont, Apolonia Homer and great-granddaughter Juliana Sustercich.Windy is preceded in death by parents Harry and Helia Homer.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2011 with visitation one hour prior to the service at the First Presbyterian Church in Ely and visitation on Wednesday, October 12 from 5:30 - 7 p.m. at the Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.
