Mary Agnes Johnson

Mary Agnes Johnson (Virkus), 79, of Ely MN, passed away peacefully at home, Saturday March 18th, 2017.
Mary was born January 8th, 1938 to Agnes and Stanley Virkus in Palisade, Minnesota. She was a graduate of Aitkin High School. Mary married Clifford Johnson in 1959.
Mary was a life time volunteer with over 40 years of service with the Cancer Society. She was also a member of the Ely Lions Club, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, PTA, Cub Scouts, New Comers, Ely Blue Line and many more. Mary was very proud of being presented with a plaque for "Volunteer of the Year" from the city of Ely in 2008.
She attended Vermilion Community College in the late 70's for bookkeeping and started her Bookkeeping/Tax Preparation Business. She also held various other jobs in the Ely area, including Irresistible Ink, Zup's samples, Cake Decorating and helped at resorts and outfitters.
Mary enjoyed being with her family, baking, cooking, gardening and playing cards She also was the hub of her friends "Coffee Clutch" for many years.
Mary is survived by her five sons: Daniel (Rose) Johnson, Ely MN, Anthony Johnson, Ely MN, Kenneth Johnson, New Glarus, WI, Stanley Johnson, Cheyenne WY, Jason Johnson, Alpine WY, 12 Grandchildren: Jeremy, Brian, Gregory, Jamie (Justin), Kegan, Brianna, Kyler, Mckenna, Hunter, Garrett, Carson, and Madison. two Great Grandchildren: Jayden and Jaxen. Siblings: Lawrence Virkus, Theresa Virkus, Michael Virkus, Carolyn Virkus, Lavonne Suzuki, and Christine Finka, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clifford Johnson, an infant daughter Anita Marie, parents Stanley and Agnes Virkus, sister Margaret, and brothers: Philip, Donald, and Louis.
Celebration of life will be held on Apr. 1st at 11:00 AM, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Ely Mn.
Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home.
