Mary Theresa Loushin, 89, of Ely, beloved wife, mother, and friend to all who knew her, died peacefully at home on November 6, 2015 soon after an early October diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Mary was born on March 24, 1926 in Ely to Simon and Ivana (Brinc) Zupin. She was a 1944 graduate of Ely Memorial High School and a lifelong resident of Ely.

June 18, 1949 was the magical day when she married Theodore "Ted" G. Loushin at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church where she was always an active parishioner. Mary and Ted had 54 wonderful years together before he was called by Our Lord in 2003. Mary enjoyed volunteering for several church and hospital activities, and especially looked forward to the comradery and her contributions as a member of the Ely Council of Catholic Women, KSKJ Lodge #112, the WSA Lodge, the Ely Hospital Auxiliary, and the Ladies VFW Auxiliary #2717.

While always being a dedicated homemaker, Mary also enjoyed working with other people and showed that enthusiasm during her stints as a medical secretary at the Shipman hospital where she was known for her exceptional typing and shorthand skills, as a waitress at Vertin’s (where she met and was courted by her husband Ted), and as an employee of Ely’s KFC where she, Bernie and Toni made quite a team. Mary loved working in her yard, and was rewarded with a nice lawn, garden, and beautiful flowers that always graced the front and side on the house. Other hobbies included reading history or mystery / suspense novels and working crossword puzzles. In her free time, Mary looked forward to visiting and socializing with friends while playing Tripoli and other card games, or heading downtown in the morning for coffee and a caramel roll. She was particularly grateful for having been able to spend significant time over the last several years with close relatives and friends, several of whom are also no longer with us. She continued to explore and learn new things throughout her life, with the latest (while in her 80’s) being the use of her own Pad to communicate via email. Mary always stressed the value of a good education and successfully passed that on to her children. She also ensured that our faith and continued growth in The Lord would always be at the top of our priority list. Mom was a role model for us all.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ted (Theodore G. in 2003), daughter Janice Marie (1955), sister Anne Pucel (2012), brother John Zupin (2014), and many other dear relatives and friends.

Mary is survived by sons Ted (Theodore J.) of Scottsdale, AZ and Dr. Gerald (Mpls, MN); daughter Betsy (Sister Mary Norbert) of Tehachapi, CA; sister Jenny (Jack) Parden (Post Falls, ID); sisters-in-law Lorena Loushin (Ely) and Judy Zupin (Babbitt, MN); and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary, rest in peace with the Lord. We all love you and will miss you.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service.
