Age 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at the home of her daughter Susan in Brooklyn Park, under the care of Allina Hospice and April Swanson, caregiver & friend.
Born on Sept. 8, 1920 in Hawthorne WI, she was the youngest of Charles and Josephine Matteson’s 13 children. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands (Orvald and Martin), all 12 siblings, step-son Jerry, many in-laws, several nieces and nephews as well as dear friends. She is survived by her loving children and their spouses, daughter-in-law Janny, grandchildren, family, and friends.
Tootie grew up in the rural neighborhood of Bear River MN with most of her siblings. In 1940 she married Orvald Rein and welcomed four children, Orvald (Marcie), Perry (Carolyn), Judy (Sean) Clerkin, and Susan (Terry) Loushin to their family.
In 1956, they moved the family to Babbitt MN. Tootie worked as a substitute teacher and then for what is now US Bank, Babbitt branch as a teller then the auditor until she retired in 1981. After the death of her husband, Orvald, in 1979, she met and married Martin Nelson at the Birch Lake cabin in 1983. Together they became snowbirds in Apache Jct, Arizona. They had a wonderful time traveling back and forth visiting friends and family along the way—they were always “On the Road Again.”
She loved to cook, bake, fish, golf and be with family especially the grandchildren (12 Rein and 8 Nelson) and great-grandchildren (12 Rein and 13 Nelson), one Nelson great-great grandchild plus a Rein great-great grandchild on the way. She loved all the nieces and nephews and special friends as well.
A celebration of life will be held on August 5, 2017, 11 a.m. at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Babbitt with visitation being held one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will take place in the Argo Cemetery. Family arrangements entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.
