Angela F. “Angie” Golobich, 93, of Ely died peacefully on Friday, October 26, 2018 at Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely. She was born on May 29, 1925 in Ely to Matthew and Gertrude (Zaverl) Vertnik and graduated from Ely Memorial High School, class of 1943. Following high school, Angie worked in retail at the local J.C. Penney store until she married Anton “Tony” Golobich on September 30, 1947, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. They had three children Roberta, Gerald, and Russell. Angie was a lifelong resident of Ely who enjoyed meeting and conversing with Ely and Iron Range friends and work customers. She truly enjoyed part-time work outside the home after her children were grown and worked at Marguerites Clothing store, the Gift Corner and at Irresistible Ink where she hand wrote greeting cards for business customers until the age of 80. She and Tony liked to polka dance at Dee’s Bar and the Jugoslav National Home where a group of friends established a dance club in the 80’s. She was delighted by her four grandchildren and was a great baker of Slovenian treats. She was an active volunteer and served in many offices of the Hospital Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, St. Anthony’s Church Circle, Yugoslav Club, and as a hospitality host for the Ely Chamber of Commerce.
Angie is survived by her husband of over 71 years, Tony; children Robbie Golobich of Wayzata, Gerry (Mary Lynn) Golobich of Mt. Iron, Russ (Sue) Golobich of Coon Rapids; grandchildren Jennifer (Chris) DeChantal of Maple Grove, Steven (Jill) Golobich of Duluth, Travis (fiancé Samantha) Golobich of Fargo, ND, and Brent Golobich of Coon Rapids; sister Gert Mosnik and many nieces and nephews.
