Edward C Marsolek Sr, 79, of Ely died April 19th, 2019 at Essentia St. Mary’s Hospital, Duluth following a courageous battle after a sudden medical event.
Ed was born on May 20th, 1939 in Independence Wisconsin to DA and Aggie (Matchey) Marsolek. He married Jean Klimek on September 1st, 1962. He graduated from Independence high school in 1957, attended UW Stevens-Point studying biology. Shortly after he joined the US Army and served as a military police officer. After visiting Ely and falling in love with it he moved there in 1969 and made it his home. He worked for the US forest service for 31 and a half years as a water quality technician.
Ed was an avid outdoorsman who spent much time hunting, fishing, and introducing others to outdoor sports. He was especially proud of his 47 years as a Minnesota youth firearm safety instructor. He volunteered in many different ways such as meals on wheels, serving on the police commission, volunteering at the Disabled Veterans retreat, being an active member at St. Anthony’s church and his many years of unbroken sobriety and fellowship with his AA brothers and sisters. Ed was very much about his family and put them first and foremost among all his other passions.
He is survived by four children Ed Jr (Laura), Ely, William (Stacie), Hermantown, Liz (Dave) Marttila, Minneapolis, Amy (Broc) Ebli, Shakopee; five grandchildren: Ed Marsolek III; Allie and Jake Marttila; Caitlyn and Sara Ebli; one great grandson: Rorik Marsolek; sister Maxine Cuta, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Proceeded in death by parents DA and Aggie Marsolek, Jean Marsolek, brother Zeke Marsolek and sister Norma Jean Johnson.
Service will be held at 11 AM, Friday, April 26th, 2019 at St. Anthony’s Catholic church in Ely with visitation one hour before the service.
