Roy Grotberg, 77, of Ely, passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at Essentia Health- St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
Roy was born on April 15, 1941 in LIttlefork, Minnesota. He graduated from Littlefork High School in 1959. On January 4, 1961 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed on an aircraft carrier, the USS Corral Sea and deployed to Japan, Vietnam, Hawaii and Australia. Roy was very proud that he was a Golden Shellback. He was honorably discharged on January 4, 1965. He was a very proud veteran for serving his country. He lived in Houston, Texas from 1965 to 1967 before moving to Ely in 1967. He married Judy Ann Evans on May 31, 1986. Roy was a mechanic at Northshore Mining and for the City of Ely.
Roy loved spending time with his children, step children and grandchildren. Roy also loved collecting guns, loading ammo, target shooting and fixing engines, especially flathead V8s. He was a very popular mechanic in Ely and the surrounding areas. He was a longtime member of Ely VFW Post 2717.
He also loved his quiet time with his favorite cat, Matilda, sitting in his lap.
Roy is survived by his wife Judy, children Roy (Kelly) Grotberg, Jeanine (Mike) Grotberg, Anita Hoggard, Gwendolyn Harrison, Edward (Cindy) Evans and Laura (Martin) Gaulke; grandchildren Earl, Ashley, Brian, Sammi, Jessica, John, Josh, Andrew, Kenny, Isaac, Jaeden, Cassie and Shane; and 13 great-grandchildren; sister Margit (Leroy) Nelson and sister-in-law Beth Anzinger.
He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Helen Grotberg, siblings Rosemarie, Walt Anzinger, son-in-laws William Hoggard, Henry Harrison; grandson Ryan Hoggard.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 2, 2018 at Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.
