Stephan Raymond (Ray) Schally, 80, of Ely, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely.
Ray was born on October 29,1937 to Anne and Stephan Schally in Falcon Heights, Mn. He attended grade school in Falcon Heights, Junior High at Murray High School and was a member of the first graduating class of Alexander Ramsey High School in St. Paul. He learned the piano during these years from a Sister at the local Catholic Church.
Ray began his working days at the age of 14 as a hod carrier at local construction sites. He was always a hard worker and held many jobs during his school years. He started with the State of Minnesota in 1957 and worked on many projects in the Twin Cities area as a surveyor. During his working days he was also a member of the Minnesota National Guard and worked as a East Bethel township deputy. In 1974 he transferred to the highway department in Ely. He spent many years plowing snow and patching holes. He later transferred to Vermilion Community College where he worked as maintenance foreman until his retirement.
During his lifetime Ray enjoyed waterskiing, snowmobiling, fishing and hunting. He also found time to build the family home on Fall Lake. Many friends helped with his building project but it was Ray’s fortitude, strength and knowledge that got the job done. His favorite fishing was done on Crooked Lake with many other trips to Elk Lake, the Quetico side of Basswood Lake, and Lac Seul in Northern Ontario. A hunting highlight was annual trips duck and goose hunting to the Delta Marsh in Manitoba, Canada.
Ray is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janet, daughter Stephanie Marie (David) and son Christopher Lee (Michelle), brother David O. (Sheila) Schally and nephew and niece, Daniel and Jennifer Schally and the loves of his life his grandchildren: Maximillian, Jacob and Nathan.
