Christine (Smuk) Tournat, age 69, passed away unexpectedly at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN on January 30, 2025.
Chris was born in Ely, MN on December 9, 1955 to William and Gloria Smuk. She married her husband of 46 years, Robert Tournat, in 1978 and they raised two children, Damian and Lisa.
Chris worked on the track gang at Minntac Mining Co. in her earlier years. She also waitressed at various establishments in Ely, but was most well-known at the Ely Steak House during her 20 years of service, before retirement.
Chris was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was truly one of a kind and known for her vivacious, fun-loving, carefree spirit. Her love of music and dancing, especially to the blues and polka, was what made her happiest. She was integral in helping coordinate the Boundary Waters Bluesfest and was the life of every social event. She loved her family and friends fiercely and fully and was always the first one to volunteer to help out a friend in need. Chris was loved by all and knew no stranger. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of her family, friends and many more whose lives were touched by her.
Chris was preceded in death by her parents, William and Gloria Smuk, and sisters, Kathleen Smuk and Desiree Grigsby. She is survived by her loving family, who absolutely adored her and will miss her dearly; husband Robert Tournat; son Damian Tournat; daughter Lisa Schuh; grandchildren Johnathan, Ruby and Sullivan; great-granddaughter Adelynn; brother Mark Smuk; sister Julie Smuk.
Services will be held on February 22, 2025 at the Ely Gospel Church in Ely, MN. Visitation will start at 10am, with the memorial service to begin at 11:00am, and luncheon to follow. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
