Glenn A Biebl

Glenn A. Biebl, 87, of Ely, passed away at Carefree Assisted Living in Babbitt, on Thursday, January 6, 2022.

Glenn has reunited with his beloved wife JoAnn, and what a full life he lived! Glenn grew up on a farm in Barnum, Minnesota, the youngest of three boys. He met his future wife, JoAnn in high school where they graduated together in 1952. Because of the opportunities that mining provided, Glenn and JoAnn moved to Winton in 1957 and then to Ely in 1966, so Glenn could work at Reserve Mining. Glenn spent his career working as a conductor on the railroad for Reserve. He also earned a carpentry degree at Eveleth Tech during a Reserve shutdown. Glenn used those carpentry skills when he and his son, Brian, built a beautiful log home overlooking Shagawa Lake.
Glenn and JoAnn enjoyed many years of shared activities including both downhill and cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling with several visits to Dorothy Molter’s cabin on Knife Lake. They discovered the joys of square dancing and spent many years of fellowship and fun traveling the area with their square dance group, the Wilderness Whirlers. In later years after Glenn retired, traveling became a regular adventure. He went on a number of cross-country motorcycle trips with some local church groups. He and JoAnn took a “bucket list” train trip across the US. They went on cruises and visited Mexico on multiple occasions to escape the Minnesota winter.
Glenn loved cribbage and was able to get one 29-hand in recent years. Glenn and JoAnn gathered often with friends for cards, games, meals and shared many wonderful memories. Costume mystery parties were a big hit along with sunset cruises on Shagawa Lake. He enjoyed anything to do with the outdoors whether trolling for walleye, canoeing, hunting or ice fishing. His mechanical and vehicle repair skills came in handy to maintain our family vehicles, but he lovingly restored several beautiful classic cars.
Glenn and JoAnn were active members of the Ely United Methodist Church. They were proud members of the crew making those famous Methodist Church pasties every month. Glenn was on “rutabaga duty” for the majority of his service.
Glenn is dearly missed by his three children; Glenda (Steve), Brian (Casi) and Sandy (Chuck); His grandchildren: Stephanie, Ted, Courtney, Riley, Ben and Griffin and his great grandchildren, Devon and Finley. Glenn was preceded in death by his wife JoAnn (Culbertson), his brothers Kenny and Jerry and his beloved grandson, Ben Biebl.
Thank you to the Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital ER Staff and the Essentia Health St. Mary’s East Range Hospice Team for your care during these last difficult days. Our biggest thanks and appreciation go to the incredible staff at Carefree Living in Babbitt. Since Dad moved there in September 2020, he had transitioned from assisted living to memory care. As his Parkinson’s disease progressed, the staff adapted to Dad’s “feisty side” and worked through everything to find the best way to care for him. They loved Dad’s spunk and respected him as a person. We are forever grateful!
Memorials to the Ely United Methodist Church are appreciated. A celebration of Glenn’s life will take place at a later date.
