Irene McEntyre of Ely, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025 at Boundary Waters Care Center at the age of 93.
Irene was born September 11, 1932 in Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada, to Bernard and Mary (Jolicoeur) Flynn. She married Roy McEntyre on May 12, 1955 and became a Navy wife for 20 years, traveling throughout United States with Roy, their five children, and many beloved dogs.
Upon retirement, they moved the family to Ely, where Irene was involved with the Sled Dog Association and worked as a bookkeeper at Ace Hardware. She spent her free time watching the birds at their home on the river and enjoyed many days at their cabin on Rainy Lake.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Her grandchildren fondly remember her for her ability to make them laugh with spontaneous, edgy comments woven into their conversations. Many unforgettable memories were made.
She is survived by her children: Laurie McEntyre, Ed McEntyre, Kathy (Brian) Kainz, Michelle McEntyre and Stu (Jeanne) McEntyre; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Roy McEntyre; her parents; her brother, Eugene Flynn; granddaughter, Rachelle Vacha; and many lifelong friends.
A celebration of Irene’s life will be planned for Labor Day weekend in 2026.
Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.
