Lawrence “Larry” Thompson Obituary

Lawrence “Larry” Thompson passed away peacefully in his home in Babbitt, MN on January 6th, 2025.

Larry was born on August 26th, 1946 in Ely, MN. He was raised in Waasa Township and graduated from Embarrass High School. As a teen Larry was athletic and part of the famous “Flying Finns” track team.

Larry’s career was in the construction industry where he was a heavy equipment operator and belonged to the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 49. His career path took him to many corners of the country from Florida to Alaska as well as here in his home state of Minnesota, touching many lives in the process.

Always the adventurer, after retirement Larry traveled extensively, often with his close friend Arlyn Raati. He was an avid sportsman. His knowledge of firearms, fishing and camping was unmatched.

He enjoyed spending time with family, friends and neighbors and always had a story or “tale” to captivate his audience with. In the past few years, it was getting harder for Larry to get around, but he would wake every morning with his motto, “Life is good. I opened my eyes again.”

We are saddened that this past weekend those eyes didn’t open, but a good, full, exciting life was lived.

Larry is survived by his daughter Barbara Thompson, son Corey Thompson, Grandson Michael Frost, Sister Norma Heikkila and many nieces and nephews with whom he shared a special bond.

Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Alice (Haapala) Thompson, father William, “Bill” Thompson, brother Kenneth Thompson, sister-in-law Marilyn Thompson and granddaughter Amber Lynn Spoke. His beloved dog Rosie and cat Pumpkin, and Juliet his princess.

A celebration of life will be held on January 25th, 2025 at 2:00 PM at the HideAway Supper Club on Joseph Street in Babbitt, MN.
