Louis J. Gornick, 98, of Ely, MN, passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at Carefree Living in Ely.
He was born in Ely to Margie (Palcher) Gornick and Louis Gornick, Sr. on August 6, 1926. He was a graduate of Ely Memorial High School and Vermilion Community College. Soon after high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a radio operator on a landing ship for tanks and a destroyer in the Pacific during WWII and was later recalled to serve in the Korean Conflict.
He returned from military service to begin his career as the business manager at Ely School District 696, a position he retired from after 37 years of service.
Louis was a civic-minded citizen and served his community as a member of the Ely Kiwanis Club and the Ely Fire Department. He was a member of American Legion #248, VFW Post #2717, and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
Louis is survived by his sister, Mary Jean Elioff of Ely and many cousins.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at St. Anthony’s Church in Ely. Per Louis’s wishes, there will be no visitation prior to the funeral service. Military honors will follow at the Ely Cemetery.
