Mark Douglas Luthens, age 75, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2024, in Ely, MN.
Mark was born in Hutchinson, MN February 20, 1949, to Margaret (Hempel) and Orville Luthens. He began his school career in a one-room schoolhouse until the fourth grade when he moved on to attend public school in Hutchinson. Mark graduated from Hutchinson High School and then attended St. Cloud State College graduating in 1970 with majors in both Biology and Geography. Also in 1970, he met Sharon Schlender and they were united in marriage on April 29, 1972. In 1973, Mark began a 35-year career with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries division. His work with the DNR brought together parts of his life that he enjoyed the most: Fishing, hard work, and being outdoors. He made many lifelong friendships through his job and was proud of the work that he was a part of.
Mark was many things. The consummate outdoorsman, whether fishing, camping, hunting deer and ducks, chasing trout on winter camping trips, or spending time at the cabin that he built himself to share with his family. He was always looking for the next great trout hole, deer stand, and duck blind.
Mark was also a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Nothing brought him more joy than being with his family and sharing all the things he loved to do.
Mark is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sharon. Sons Andy (Kate) and Brady (Devon). Grandchildren Clara (13), Lucy (12) and Jack (10). Sister Vicky Luthens of Appleton, WI. Sister-in-Law Janet Schlender, Nieces Pam (Mark) Palm and Barb (Tim Nordgaard) Schlender, great-niece Tori Palm and great-nephew Luke Palm.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home.
