Mary Jo Tome, Ely, passed away at home on January 6, 2024.
Mary was born to John and Ruth Lunquist on October 11, 1952 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Mary moved to Ely in 1973. She worked at the Escape, Portage Bar and finally at the Ely Post Office where she was a mail carrier until she retired. Mary also was a rural route mail carrier after retirement. Mary had a passion for local government and served as a Fall Lake Township supervisor for many years.
Mary married the love of her life Steve Tome on September 6, 1980. They made their home overlooking Farm Lake and the North Kawishiwi River where they raised their three boys, Jack, Joe and Brian.
Mary’s hobbies included a stitch and bitch group (sewing with friends), baking, cooking, a passion for writing, and gardening. Family meant the world to her. She made it a priority to spend time with friends and loved ones.
Mary was preceded in death by her father John, mother-in-law Lynn, father-in-law Bernie, and her husband Steve. Mary is survived by her sons, Jack (Kira), Joe (Alaina), Brian (Helen). Grandchildren Summer, Jake, Madelyn and Ethan, Mother, Ruth Lunquist, sisters Renee (Rick) Martin, Jenny (Bruce) LaChance, sister-in-law Randi (Dave) Tachney, mother-in-law Vi Tome, several nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and a vast network of other relatives and friends.
A memorial service/celebration of life will be held during the warmer months when we can enjoy the outdoors as much as she did.
