Philip J. Hway passed away May 20, 2024, in West Bend, WI. He was born September 3, 1946, in Berwyn, IL to Joseph and Lydia (Gajda) Hway. He graduated from Maine West High School in Des Plaines, IL, and from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, earning his MBA. He served active duty in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Reserves.
Philip’s business career focused on marketing, strategy, and international business for several well-known corporations before settling in West Bend, WI to help his wife run her family business, Pick Heaters, Inc. His passions were playing, performing, and teaching piano, with emphasis on jazz and blues. He enjoyed owning and riding horses and playing on a polo team. He also volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America and numerous other organizations. Phil loved Ely ever since his first scout canoe trip back in the 1950s. Later, he
came up often over the years to visit his brother Jeff, going out on numerous canoe trips with him, his four nephews, and many friends.
Philip is survived by his wife of 47 years, Prudence (Pick) Hway; sister Carole (Jim) Carter; brother Jeff (Donna) Hway; two sons, Derek and Ben Pieper; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely. A service will be held on Saturday, June 1st at Ely Gospel Church, with 10 AM visitation and 11 AM service, Pastor Tim Cook officiating. Burial will be at the Ely Cemetery.
