Iconic Elyite and beloved and respected son, brother, soldier, businessman, husband, uncle, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend passed away in the early morning on December 5, 2023 at Carefree Living in Ely, MN.
Rod was born on February 10, 1935 in Hawarden, IA, the oldest of four children, to Ted and Irene Loe. Rod’s family eventually moved to Slayton, MN where Rod grew up and graduated from high school in 1953.
Upon graduating, Rod volunteered for the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict from 1953 – 1956. After his time in the Army, Rod moved to Ely in December of 1956. He spent time working in an area logging camp before taking a job at Reserve Mining Company in the spring of 1957 and worked there until 1982. He started R & R Transfer with Roy Plankers in 1959.
On June 28, 1959 Rod married Mae Kathryn (Tootsie) LaTourelle. They were married 62 years when Tootsie passed away on December 8, 2021. Rod and Tootsie raised three children. Daughter Pam and sons Pat and Mike.
Rod impacted the Ely community in many ways. He was one of the founders of Boundary Waters State Bank, former owner of the West Gate Motel and Land Developer of Loe Industrial Park on the Northeast end of Ely. Rod was a member of the VFW, American Legion and a member of the Ely United Methodist Church.
He will always be remembered for his generosity, providing his time, labor and support to help the town of Ely, his church and many individuals throughout his 67 years as an Ely resident.
Rod was not big on hobbies or leisure time activities. Rod devoted his life to working, running a business and providing a quality life for his family. He was also a servant member of the community and church.
Rod was preceded in death by his father Ted, mother Irene, brothers Terry and Bill, and his wife Tootsie.
He is survived by his sister Janice (Arvid) Behrens. Children: Pamela Turnbull (Mike), Patrick (Brielle) and Michael (Leslie Kurre) all of Ely. Grandchildren: Alexis Baack (Jeff), Blaine Turnbull (Alexandra), Morgan Loe and Logan Loe. Great-grandchildren: Beckett Baack, Brexley and Hollis Turnbull. Along with numerous nieces and nephews.
