Rosa Lillie Hornig, age 83, of Ely, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 3, 2026 with her loving husband of 60 years, Ron, by her side.
Rosa was born March 25, 1943, in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin to William and Lillie Buerk.
She graduated from University High School in Santa Monica, California and later married the love of her life, Ronald Hornig on April 23, 1966 in Santa Monica, California.
Rosa had a deep love for the outdoors, her family, and her loyal pets, Quincy and Lacey.
She was known for her fun-loving spirit, especially her enthusiasm for ping-pong and cherished the many friendships she built throughout her life. In 1976, Rosa and Ron took a leap of faith, leaving sunny Mission Viejo, California for the rugged beauty of Northern Minnesota. Together they owned and operated Shig-Wak Resort on the Echo Trail for 16 years, where they welcomed countless guests who became lifelong friends.
Rosa is survived by her devoted husband Ron, her sons, Michael of Haines City, Florida, and James (Jaime) of Eagan, Minnesota, her granddaughter, Bobbi of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; and her sister Hilde of Hutto, Texas, and many special friends which are too many to list.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lillie Buerk, her brother Major William Carl Buerk, dear friends, Sharon Karlinski and Ray Copeland, along with all the numerous people she made friends with over the years.
Rosa will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, warm heart, and the love she shared with family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.
