Rose Lee Newman Obituary

Rose Lee Newman, 94, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2022 at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth.
Rose Lee was born in Ely on Oct. 30, 1927 to Joseph and Katherine (Rozich) Peshel. She graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1945 and received post-secondary education at Ely Junior College. In her youth she worked in the Ely theater and later as a Dental Assistant for Dr. Call and Dr. Skule. She married Walter John Newman on Oct 18, 1952 and shortly thereafter moved to Ashwaubenon near Green Bay, WI. While there she worked as an office clerk in the Brown County Airport. In 1957 they returned to Ely to begin their family. Over the next four years they had 3 boys; Paul, John and Mark.
During this chapter of her life, Rose Lee was a loving homemaker, spouse and mother. She loved to cook and bake and there was never a scarcity of home cooked food and baked goods in the house, especially homemade candy at Christmas time! Rose Lee was a lifetime member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. She was a member of the Ely Council of Catholic Women and active in the St Anthony Choir, the American Legion Auxiliary and the National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees. When the boys were older, she went back to work, part-time, as a parish cook where she further engaged her cooking and baking passion. She cooked daily meals for Fr. Faith, Fr. Jackson, Fr. Johnson, Fr. Larson, Fr. Gallinotti, Fr. O’Conner and many other guests of the parish house. Throughout her life, Rose Lee had a sharp mind for remembering names. It was common for her to get phone calls asking if she knew who married who, how many kids they had and their names. She usually knew the answers and she remained sharp until her last days.
Rose Lee was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Walter in 2012; sisters Victoria Johnson, Margaret Wuokila, Ann Ehlers, Mary Kelley, and Katherine Peshel; brothers John Peshel and Joseph Peshel Jr.
She is survived by her sons; Paul (Kris) Newman, John (Pamela) Newman, Mark (Tammy) Newman and grandchildren Rachael, Katherine, Nicholas, Caitlin and Brandon.
