Shirley Riemer Obituary

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of this great daughter of Ely MN, Shirley Marie Riemer (Klun) on September 19, 2020. Shirley was 79 years young and had been residing at Ely Carefree Living. She died of complications attributed to Covid 19.

Shirl, as she was known to many, was born in Ely to Mollie and Leonard Klun November 22nd, 1940. Shirley was sister to Gary, James, Rosemary and Leonard. In 1958 Shirley was crowned Miss Ely. An aspiring actress, Shirl attended the University of Minnesota where she earned a degree in English and Drama. The highlight of her time there was playing the extraordinary figure, Joan of Arc. A very fitting role for such a strong and brave lady. Upon graduating, she decided to use her talents as a teacher. Instead of taking an easy road, Shirley went where she was needed most and took a position in the Detroit School system. It was there she met the love of her life, David Riemer. He was a teacher and musician. They shared a passion for the arts. Their love bore two sons, Mark and James, and they would follow in their parent’s footsteps becoming accomplished performers themselves. Shirley and Dave became well known figures in the Detroit area amateur theater scene. Shirl was known for her detail as a costume designer and director. When they retired, they moved back to Shirley’s beloved Ely, where they also became active in local theater. David passed in 1997. Shirley is survived by Mark (Ramon) and James (Natalie), one beautiful grandson, Cole, Laura Achurch, and many loving nieces and nephews.

As these are extraordinary times, there will not be a funeral or memorial at this time. The family will look to next summer to hold a celebration of life when things are deemed safe and proper to do so. We would like to recognize the amazing women and men at Carefree Living. They are all heroes. In lieu of cards or flowers, we would ask for a few simple things. Wear a mask. This disease is real. Be kind to one another and keep each other safe. And lastly, vote.
