William Tulla Obituary

William Joseph Tulla, age 73, of Ely, MN, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on July 27, 2025.

Born in Winton, MN, on December 28, 1951, Bill grew up in Ely, where he developed a deep love for the outdoors and a strong sense of integrity and hard work that followed him throughout his life. After graduating high school, he proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and completed basic training, laying the foundation for a life marked by discipline and resilience.

After returning home, Bill began working at Reserve Mining Company in Babbitt until layoffs in the 1980s shifted his career path. He went on to work for Longyear Drilling and Boyles Brothers Drilling before ultimately becoming a chemical plant technician at DB Western in Virginia, MN, where he remained until his early retirement.

Bill met the love of his life, Roxanne, in 1977. They married in 1979 and built a life together, raising two children. His dedication to his work was matched only by his devotion to his family.

A true outdoorsman, Bill held the Minnesota state record for brook trout, caught in 1991, a proud achievement that reflected his lifelong passion for fishing, hunting, and nature. He had a gift for storytelling, a knack for striking up conversations with anyone, and a heart that never hesitated to help someone in need, no matter the hour.

In his later years, Bill enjoyed quiet moments feeding wildlife. He was an active volunteer with the Ely Area Food Shelf since 2009, and he worked parttime for Voyageur North Outfitting sharing his knowledge and passion for the outdoors. He was a man of faith and studied his bible regularly furthering his relationship with Christ. He was also an incredible cook, often surprising his family with something delicious. His presence was steady, kind, and unforgettable.

Bill is survived by his loving wife Roxanne; son Deven; daughter Fawna Berger (Sam); grandchildren Ian and Emma; brother Greg (Jodie); sisters Connie and Linda Carlson (Tim); along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Helen Tulla.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

At Bill’s request there will be no funeral service.
